The Mission of the Friends of the Arts

The Wallace - Rose Hill Friends of the Arts was founded in 2004 to promote Fine Arts in our community and to enhance Arts education in the Wallace - Rose Hill district, kindergarten through high school.

Our objective is to bring Fine Arts programs to the Wallace-Rose Hill and Chinquapin schools by donating time, leadership and guidance to the area's youth. Yearly fundraisings are used directly for programs in the school system for Art and Music programs.

The Friends of the Arts work extensively with school teachers, principals, Duplin County school administrators and community partners to schedule outstanding performances for all students, kindergarten through high school. In addition, performing artists visit the classrooms and work with the students on skills such as songwriting, storytelling, and playing musical instruments. Our community-wide events include sponsorship of a brass quintet to perform at the Chamber of Commerce "Christmas at Twilight" on Saturday, November 18.

Friends of the Arts performances are held in the 752-seat Fine Arts Center at the Wallace-Rose Hill High School located in Teachey, North Carolina, as well as in the local Wallace, Rose Hill and Chinquapin Elementary Schools.

Non-Profit Status

The Wallace-Rose Hill Friends of the Arts is a tax-exempt non profit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and as such depends entirely on the financial and volunteer support of the community.

Scholarship Awards Program

During 2024 The Friends of the Arts Board of Directors announced two new scholarship programs to benefit students of the Wallace-Rose Hill communities who are pursuing Fine Arts Education.

The first Charles Shaeffer Memorial Scholarship was awarded March 2024 to Theo Dove, a graduate of Wallace-Rose Hill High School, who is now pursuing a bachelor's degree in the Arts at UNC-Greensboro. Shaeffer, a founding member of Friends of the Arts, also served as president 2004-2019.

The Jack Zoesch Memorial Scholarship supports students in the Wallace-Rose Hill community who are pursuing an in-depth study of a musical instrument. The first recipient of the award is a 6th grade student at Wallace Elementary who is studying piano at Duplin Music Academy. Zoesch served as a founding member of Friends of the Arts from its inception in 2004. His enthusiasm for the Arts and for the programs provided by the Friends of the Arts served as a foundation for many activities we support today.

Grants Received 2024

The Friends of the Arts applied for and received 2 grants in 2024. One grant was from the NC Arts Council to fund an Artist in Our Midst, Timothy Edmonson, who taught drawing techniques such as self-portrait, line drawing and proportion drawing for 5th grade students at Wallace Elementary School and for 7th grade students at Rose Hill-Magnolia Middle School.

An additional grant was received from the Duplin County Community Foundation to sponsor specific community wide programming.
